  The Pluralist Theory of Ethics Programs Orientations and Ideologies: An Empirical Study Anchored in RequisiteVariety

  We propose

  in this article

  a pluralistic theory ofethics programs orientations

  empirically derived from thestatistical analysis of responses to an ad hoc questionnaireon organizational ethics practices. The results of ourresearch identify six different orientations to ethics pro-grams

  corresponding to as many types of organizationalethics practices. Th is model goes beyond the traditionalopposition between a compliance ori entation

  focused onthe regulation of behavior and the detection of deviance

  and a values-based orientation

  which is said to be morereflective and enabling

  and allows for a more sophisticatedunderstanding of the composition of ethics programs.Drawing from the theo ry of requisite variety

  we suggestthat these six orientations are not to be considered inopposition but rather as complementary and even syner-gistic. In doing so

  this pluralism has the potential tocounter the potential deleterious effects of dominant logicsand ideologies in organizations. Our model thus allows fora more empirical analysis of organizational ethics practicesand programs and provides a new analytical framework forresearch and practice in considering the principle of req-uisite variety in ethics management. This represents

  a contribution to the advancement of know ledgeand practice in organizational ethics.
