Biography

O'More College of Design - English

Writer at Ramsey Solutions, A Dave Ramsey Company
Writing & Editing
Jessa R.
Sexton
Greater Nashville Area, TN
Coming from a long line of educators, I thrive on sharing knowledge—and (more importantly) my love of learning. Through the art of the written and spoken word, I have found a means to do so; these are skills I delight in toning, tuning, and tinkering. Researching the masters, trying new approaches, distributing my discoveries: all is a process that brings me joy and develops me as a writer, speaker, educator, communicator-in-general, mother, wife, friend, and Christian.

I was first published in my elementary school’s literary magazine for a rather repetitive poem I wrote about lightning in the 4th grade. The joy of writing has held my heart ever since. Once through O’More Publishing and now printed with Hilliard Press, my children’s books, textbooks, devotionals, and educational guides reflect my love of research, writing, and ever-learning.

I taught and tutored for nine years on writing, literature, education, research, and speech to ninth grade through college level including positions as graduate assistant in the Harding University Writing Lab, teacher at Searcy High School and with Upward Bound (the latter being a government-funded educational resource for low-income or possible first-generation college students), and Associate Professor at O’More College of Design.

In my role as an educator, as Executive Editor of O’More Publishing for seven years, and in my current position as Executive Editor of Hilliard Press, I bring students and authors to a better understanding of writing and encourage not my own voice to come through, but the best version of that writer’s voice.

Currently, I write for the Financial Peace division at Ramsey Solutions.

  • These Things I Pray for You: My Child

    Hilliard Press

This book lays out the characteristics I pray my children will have, exploring each characteristic by defining it, investigating it scripturally, showing how it should be present in my children, and then praying for it. As I began to think about the characteristics and blessings I pray for my children, I realized that a knowledge of the word and of The Word—what the dictionary and others say about the word’s meaning and intent, and what God’s Scriptures say—would make my prayers deeper, give better direction to my hopes. So this study creates that direction to a mother’s prayers. As a mom, I know the clash between the desire to be in God’s Word and the desire to fulfill the motherly-myriad of other demands. I like to read devotional books, but a couple of items are important to me. First of all, I want a length that is daily-doable. But, at the same time, I want something with depth. I also want strong scriptural references that will make me think about my walk. And I do like it when a reading leads me into prayer time. This book meets my personal needs on all those levels, and I know, from talking to other mothers, that these needs aren’t only mine. This book revolves around two of the most important things in my life: my children and my God, connecting the two as I bring my children and their future before the One who told me to ask, and it will be given (Matthew 7:7).

  • Live the Blessing

    Hilliard Press

We are so blessed. Have you ever wondered why? God gives us much so that we can do much for others! When we live the blessing, our kindness brings praise, glory, and thanksgiving to our Heavenly Father (2 Corinthians 9:8-12). This book supplies ten Bible verses with illustrations by ten different artists to explain why we should help others. The end of the book has questions that can guide a parent or teacher to further the understanding of children of all ages about the topic of blessing those around us and those far away. An excellent tool for the classroom or for any household, this paperback book is a great way to encourage youth to put the needs of others in their minds and in their hearts.

  • Educational Wellness 2nd Edition

    Hilliard Press

Educational Wellness and the Hilliard Circle of Teaching and Learning theory encourage rigorous instruction in a sensory-rich atmosphere conducive to active retention of academic content. Hilliard and Sexton explore sound theory then accompany their research with a veritable “menu” of examples and suggestions for implementation refreshingly applicable to secondary and higher education classrooms. Immensely readable, this book brims with practical suggestions for teaching across the spectrum of intelligences which can often be a daunting task for already overworked teachers in overcrowded classrooms. Lori Napier Facilitating Teacher, Maury County Teaching Center The Hilliard Circle of Teaching and Learning is a multidimensional approach to teaching and learning that incorporates all the research on effective teaching to date. Good planning, clear goals, and active student involvement tied to application lead to absorption of knowledge, skills, and fair analysis of strengths and weaknesses. This book focuses on healthy growth and changes in both teachers and students in the teaching and learning processes. Dr. Jan Hayes Professor Emeritus of Middle Tennessee State University

  • Writing inside the Box

    O'More Publishing

The intent of this workbook is to share the tools and tricks I’ve learned in my seven years tutoring and teaching writing, and from my twenty-something years writing. Each entry I will explore a topic, some broad and some quite specific, that I have found indispensable in my teaching and personal writing endeavors. I don’t have all the answers. For those studying great literature and using this workbook as a supplement, I want you to see inside the heart and head of a writer, to better appreciate the many facets that go into this process. For those wishing to hone their craft of writing, my goal is to point you in a direction, make you consider the possibilities, and lead you on a path to discovering your voice by writing inside the box.

Ohi and Eldy both find themselves a little different from other children, but their friendship makes being different seem not so bad a thing. Inspired by the author's special education training and own learning struggles, this book takes a subtle look into the trials of Eldy (LD = learning disability) and Ohi (OHI = Other Health Impairment). It is a wonderful story for children who struggle scholastically, but also for anyone ready to embrace the beauty of being you.

Equipped with a section on how to write each of the twelve poem forms, this book is excellent for teachers, students, home-schoolers, or any writing or poetry enthusiast.

It is a wonderful story for children who struggle scholastically, but also for anyone ready to embrace the beauty of being you.

  • Proverbs through the Generations

    O'More Publishing / Hilliard Press

Through the generations, the Proverbs have served as a source of wisdom. In this book, three generations—my grandfather, my dad, and myself—reflect on this wisdom and consider its lessons for families today. Though each of us have our own unique writing style and perspective based on personal life experiences, we all are brought together by our mutual love of learning, family, and God’s Word. This book's interior is perfect for personal or group study. Each chapter gives the full Proverbs in the poetic New King James version and then the devotional portion. All pages are lined for note-taking.
