Awesome
Prof. Leatherwood is such a good person. He's pretty entertaining and he makes lectures really fun! It would be an easy A if you go to class. He's totally worth taking as a prof!
Awful
It was an easy class, but he showed up 45 minutes late for the exam.

I am a published historian, a history professor, and a public speaker who actively promotes the causes of traditional military studies and battlefield preservation efforts. I also champion general protection of historic sites and natural resources from developers. I am a believer that, like the mythical phoenix, Western Civilization can renew itself. But it should be accomplished through the twin processes of education and inclusion. All good peoples should be allowed to become Americans.
"I had always hoped that this land might become a safe & agreeable Asylum to the virtuous & persecuted part of mankind, to whatever nation they might belong..." George Washington, 1782.
Eberly College Lecturer of History and the Humanities
For four academic years, I taught freshman surveys in Western Civilization on a 4/4 schedule with occasional overflow and summer classes. For the first two years, I also supervised a WVU Military History on-line course, and taught occasional History surveys. Surveys utilized web-based course materials, such as access to weekly lectures and virtual exam review sessions using WebCT and Whiteboard. Position was qualified for full-time, non-tenure employment under WVU’s Eberly College of Arts and Sciences. However, this state position expired with WVU budget reductions in 2014, and I transferred to APUS as a full-time Associate Professor.
Book Author -- Nine From Aberdeen: U.S. Army EOD in World War II
Originally trained to defend the American homeland from aerial attacks on both coasts, Col. Thomas J. Kane's EOD pioneers realized their greatest potential on foreign shores in WWII. Shortly after Pearl Harbor, Kane and eight others traveled to wartime England in order to study methods pioneered by the Royal Engineers. After completing their rigorous training, Kane and his handful of ordnancemen were entitled to wear the distinctive British Royal Engineers insignia on their American uniforms.
Kane, a native of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, returned in 1942 to supervise the U.S. Army’s very first EOD school at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland. Kane capped off his WWII career as a member of Gen. Eisenhower’s staff in Western Europe. After the war, Col. Kane remained on active duty, supervising bomb removal operations in Japan, and overseeing the new EOD branch during the Korean War.
Kane’s original cadre members continued as instructors, training eight companies and over 200 squads for field service. Several of Kane’s officers also volunteered to lead units across the Mediterranean, European, and Pacific Theaters, where they repeatedly distinguished themselves for heroism and leadership. Capt. Ronald Felton and his squad weathered the Italian mud. Capt. Joe Pilcher’s team crossed during D-Day and liberated Paris. Capt. Richard Metress died while liberating the Philippines.
Ultimately, the Army (and Air Force) Bomb Disposal service took part in nearly all landings and ground operations, suffering ten percent casualties in the European Theater alone. After the battles, they aided reconstruction efforts across the globe. Despite their contributions to World War II, comparatively few Americans have read about the exploits of this elite branch. Small numbers, wartime secrecy, and academic disinterest in military studies have relegated these forefathers of EOD to mere footnotes of history -- until now. #NineFromAberdeen

Book Description
Ever since the courtroom doors closed in 1919, the tragic Charlotte Streetcar Strike has haunted the collective memory of the Carolina Piedmont region. During a season of labor unrest, it briefly made national headlines. Five men were killed and at least twelve others were wounded by gunfire during a demonstration against Southern Public Utilities, a subsidiary of James B. Duke’s Southern Power. For many who lived afterward in North Carolina’s “Queen City,” the strike and riot were events better left forgotten, while, for later generations, the “Battle of the Barn” has become an item of curiosity.
As the centennial approaches, this book represents the result of over ten years’ worth of primary research about the Charlotte Streetcar Strike, a story that rightfully belongs to a larger narrative about the AFL’s campaign to organize transportation workers among the textile mill towns of North and South Carolina. Prior to the 1919 Charlotte Strike, the national streetcar union had overcome fierce anti-labor sentiment, from South Carolina’s state capital of Columbia to the Upcountry citadel of Spartanburg. To AFL organizers, Charlotte represented the last link in the Piedmont chain.
Associate Professor
As a full-time online professor, I currently teach History and Military History courses, from surveys in U.S. History to advanced graduate courses in Military History topics ranging from the 18th to 20th centuries. My current schedule includes undergraduate courses in Revolutionary War and Civil War, plus graduate courses in Post-1945 conflicts such as Vietnam and the Arab-Israel Conflict. I have directed and advised on M.A. theses in the Civil War and WWII. I have also completed several course design and teaching workshops.
Instructor -- Military History & Humanities (Adjunct)
Shortly after publishing my first book, I began teaching part-time online History and Military History courses for APUS, including most freshman surveys. This job was concurrent with my full-time WVU Humanities position. I was also given a chance to teach in specialty areas, such as the Civil War through Gilded Age & Progressivism. I taught my first graduate level classes in Civil War Leadership and World War II in the Pacific. I was also responsible for reading MA theses in my specialty fields. Within 18 months, I was offered a full-time position with APUS.
Part-Time Instructor
I am currently teaching as an adjunct on behalf of the On Your Time Initiative. I have taught HIST 468, the American Military Experience, and I am currently teaching both halves of the U.S. History gen-ed survey. These course lectures are delivered face-to-face with support from Blackboard.
Public Speaker
I have had several opportunities to perform as a public speaker, beginning with my dedication speech for Kane Hall at Fort Campbell, Kentucky in 2013. This is the new headquarters for the U.S. Army's 52nd EOD Group, named for Thomas J. Kane, the founding father of Army EOD in WWII and Korea. Since this event, I served as the keynote speaker at the 2013 NATEODA Convention at Virginia Beach, Virginia, and more recently, I spoke before the 2016 Global EOD Symposium in Bethesda, Maryland on the topic of EOD history for the 75th anniversary of America's entry in WWII.

"Nine from Aberdeen" is the first academic history solely devoted to the U.S. Army's Ordnance Bomb Disposal Branch from World War II. Shortly after Pearl Harbor, nine U.S. Army officers and sergeants were sent from Aberdeen Proving Ground to war-torn England in order to learn the invaluable technical skills pioneered by the British Royal Engineers. Led by the colorful Thomas J. Kane, these nine men inaugurated the new Ordnance Bomb Disposal School. Conceived initially for homeland defense, Col. Kane's branch eventually fielded over two hundred Army and Air Force bomb squads for overseas service. These courageous officers and men were forerunners of today's Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) specialists, responsible for supporting the U.S. military during combat operations and for preserving the lives of noncombatants at all other times. Using documents and photographs - many from personal collections - as well as oral interviews, this work presents a cross-section of U.S. Army and Air Force operations spanning three major theaters; Mediterranean, European, and the Pacific. Special emphasis is given to the European Theater, where Col. Kane served as Eisenhower's chief ETO bomb disposal officer. "Nine from Aberdeen" also contains charts detailing campaign participations, ordnance statistics, and other significant data. Retired Army Command Sergeant Major James H. Clifford, military consultant for the award-winning film, "The Hurt Locker", provides an afterword on EOD continuity.
