I have 21 years of experience in documenting cultural resources as an independent architectural historian, often developing teams that include architects and/or a professional photographer when appropriate. Projects include the development of Historic American Buildings Survey/Historic American Engineering Report (HABS/HAER) documentation, National Register of Historic Places reports, and Architectural Survey Work. Clients include municipalities, architecture firms, developers, engineering firms, and non-profit organizations. Recent representative projects are listed below, all of which include site visits, digital photography, primary and secondary source research, as well as the development of architectural descriptions and integrity assessments, and historic context essays. My professional background exceeds the U.S. Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualifications Standards in Architectural History.
Consultant
Developing a Historic American Building Survey report for Brookfield Zoo. Historic context essays focus on the institution's pioneering role in progressive exhibit design--from barless displays of the 1930s to post-1970 "landscape immersion" exhibits--which together have served as educational vehicles to advance Brookfield Zoo's conservation mission.
Consultant
Developed a Historic American Buildings Survey report for the Maywood Park Racetrack, which operated from 1946 to 2015 and served as one of the premier half-mile Standardbred racetracks in the U.S. for much of its history. Contextual essays focused on the establishment of the racetrack and its significance; original owner Arthur T. Galt, Sr., a real estate developer; and architect Lionel K. Levy, who specialized in sports facilities.
Consultant
Developed a National Register of Historic Places nomination for the 1847 Solomon Juneau House in Theresa, Wisconsin. The house is significant for its association with Solomon Juneau (1793-1856), a fur trader, office holder, and businessman, who was closely identified with every step in the development of pioneer Milwaukee. It is also among the best preserved examples of a modest Greek Revival style wood frame house dating from the 1840s in Dodge County and exhibits many hallmarks of this style.
Consultant
Developed in-depth historical and architectural reports for the following historic buildings owned by the University of Chicago: Court Theatre; Cochrane-Woods Art Center and Smart Museum; Chicago Lying-In Hospital; Lorado Taft House; Midway Studios; Social Science Research Building; Wieboldt Hall; Ryerson Physical Laboratory Building; Eckhart Hall; Lillie House; Wilder House; Sunny Gymnasium.
Consultant
Evaluated the eligibility of eight buildings at O'Hare International Airport for national and city landmark designation and wrote in-depth historical documentation reports on each. They include the airport's historic restaurant building and Terminal 2 (C.F. Murphy Associates, 1962); I.M. Pei's air traffic control tower (1971), C.F. Murphy's O'Hare Hilton Hotel (1972); and Murphy/Jahn's United Airlines Terminal 1 (1988).
