I am a PhD candidate in the Joint Program in English and Education at the University of Michigan. I received by B.A. in English and Languages (Japanese) and my M.A. in English at the University of Alaska Anchorage. My current research interests include course management systems, digital literacies, online pedagogy, disability studies, and reading practices. My dissertation examines how writing instructors’ pedagogies and design decisions in Canvas affect the way in which students engage with it through their writing and learning.

- Co-authored an article with a faculty lead and a fellow graduate student.
- Researched undergraduate students’ online writing practices using quantitative survey methods.
- Developed survey questions and articulating results in relation to secondary research.

- Developed textual and interactive content for a website related Developing Writers.
- Interviewed participants about the importance of writing in their lives.

- Collaborated on several technical documents including webpage infrastructures, organizational charts, video editing plans, and instruction sets.

I served on a committee that evaluated the standards and facilities of the UAA Learning Resources Center according to guidelines set forth by the Council for the Advancement of Standards (CAS) for Higher Education. During this time, I compiled and edited drafts of the CAS Self-Assessment Report, as well as coordinated schedules, deadlines, and task lists for contributors to the report.
Director, Pacific Rim Conference on Literature and Rhetoric
Responsibilities:
- Organized events, presentations, and schedules for the conference.
- Created faculty-led workshops for writing conference proposals and presenting.
- Managed the budget for keynote speakers, advertising, and catering.
- Communicated with keynote speakers, faculty, and other parties involved directly in the conference.
- Wrote agendas and led meetings for the conference committee.
I negotiated event opportunities with Alaskan authors, booksellers, publishers, librarians, teachers, and other participants; designed text and video marketing and outreach materials for participants and the community; wrote and updated texts on the Alaska Book Week website; promoted via Facebook and YouTube; and wrote agendas and led meeting meetings for the Alaska Book Week Committee.
I selected and coordinated judges for a writing contest for Alaskan students, communicated with the national coordinator in Washington, D.C. about winners and honorable mentions, and sent out award letters for winners and honorable mentions.
