I taught EFL writing/argumentation and research courses for Fort Hays State University in China for nine years, and had an amazing experience -- fabulous food, curious culture, terrific travel, and personable people. I also taught for Pittsburg State University in Asunción, Paraguay -- a beautiful but relatively unknown country. These experiences have changed my life, my way of seeing -- my lens: looking at people, places, things, thoughts, and feelings all have a different frame, and the panorama is really beautiful.
Now I've returned to the USA to coordinate the FHSU English Department’s overseas instruction, serving as a liaison among all of the involved parties: the international faculty, the English department, the Office of Strategic Partnerships, the FHSU administration, and the partnership administrations.

Reviews the basic elements of written English. Students write paragraphs and short essays.
English 013. Basic English for ESL I
Teaches the fundamental elements of written and spoken English, emphasizing the acquisition of basic grammatical and syntactical structures and the writing of paragraphs and short essays.
English 100. English Composition
A required composition course for non-native speaking students scoring below a certain level as determined by a departmental placement examination or ACT scores. Emphasizes reading and writing skills appropriate to academic discourse.
English 101. College English I
General education basic skills course. Focuses on developing reading and writing skills appropriate to academic discourse. Integrates the writing process, rhetorical modes, and library skills into writing assignments related primarily to nonfiction readings.
English 102. College English II
General education basic skills course. Emphasizes critical reading, research, and argumentation.
English 210. Composition: Business, Professional, and Technical Writing
Provides instruction and practice in writing the kinds of letters, memos, instructions, and reports required in the professional world of business and industry. Emphasizes both formats and techniques necessary for effective and persuasive professional communication.

· Develop curriculum and pedagogy for international programs that meets department standards and achieves program goals.
· Review course schedules, class sizes, etc. to determine hiring needs based on enrollment projections and number of returning faculty.
· Update and distribute position ads, review applicants, conduct phone interviews, and hire composition instructors for program.
· Coordinate/lead training sessions for composition during orientation.
· Work with English department administrative assistant on course approvals.
· Work with English department administrative assistant on travel arrangements for all composition instructors.
· Review syllabi for all instructors and file with English department and Dean’s office.
· Respond to daily, on-going issues: personnel issues, student complaints, problem students, plagiarism cases, curricular questions, grade changes, etc.
· Maintain lines of communication with international faculty and partner administration.
· Visit partner schools during spring semester to observe instructors in the classroom, consult with instructors individually and in groups, and to meet with partner administrations. Write-up teacher observations reports.
· Ensure grades are entered for international courses.
· Develop and implement assessment procedures for international students and faculty.
· Review teacher evaluations reports and determine who to rehire.
· Coordinate with other departments to solicit necessary documents for visas and work permits for new hires.
· Review textbook needs and make necessary recommendations.
· Write letters of recommendations and respond to reference interviews as requested.

Readings and writing assignments focus on treating subjects appropriate for students in scientific, technical or business fields. Formal expository writing and the preparation of reports are emphasized.

Instructor
Taught ENG 101 and 102 for PSU undergraduate coursework on the campus of Catolica Universidad in Asuncion, Paraguay. These general education undergraduate courses were taught in English. Students could take up to 25 credit hours per year for two years, for a total of 50 hours of coursework. Students can complete their degree program on the Pittsburg, Kansas campus. These academic credits, which will apply toward a bachelor’s degree at PSU, may transfer to other Kansas or US universities and colleges.
