Education Management
J. Michael "Mike"
Hammett
Monrovia, California
As of June 8, I have retired from public education in California. Still physically and mentally alert and off to accomplish my "bucket list." First on the list is a 2-week cruise to Alaska at the end of August and the beginning of September. I am hoping to move from California to my beloved Colorado, but not sure when that will take place. Beware, friends and colleagues, I may be visiting you in the not-too-distant future in some of the exotic places that you live.

Experience

  • U.S. State Department

    Diplomat, Consular Officer

After a 7-week orientation class, learning Spanish at FSI and consular training, served at the US Embassy in Panama, first on the visas line, and then as American Citizen Services Chief in the Consular Section, serving the 30,000 US citizens living, working, vacationing, incarcerated, or getting lost in Panama .

  • Camp William Mendenhall School

    Educator

Taught incarcerated juveniles US History, World History, English Language Arts, and basic Mathematics. I also taught extended day classes for GED, CAHSEE, and in Literature in Film and Theater. The probation department was great to work with, giving great support; the environment was absolutely fantastic: mountains, trees, and blue skies (and snow in winter); the classes were small. Not many schools offer this combination of opportunities to teach youth.

    • Mentors candidates through a minimum of eight (8) in the classroom visits per semester. A minimum of four (4) visits take place each term (9 week terms). Mentor visits consist of a combination of lesson observations, support sessions, and lesson planning.
    • Schedules and maintain weekly communication and support sessions with the mentee through a variety of modes of effective communication.
    • Provides information on the development and implementation of future professional plans.
    • Encourages responsibility and creativity in the clinical practice and/ or induction experience.
    • Creates and maintains a professional, friendly relationship with the teacher candidate and master teacher.

  • Gabrielino High School

Educator and Social Studies Department Chair

Former educator in social sciences (government, economics, psychology, geography; US, world, and European histories; Advanced Placement classes) and earth sciences. Social studies department chair; curricular development (government, economics, financial literacy, geography and psychology); Laid off in 2011 through 2013 and worked as a substitute teacher at the middle school and high school in the district where I was laid off.

  • Azusa Pacific University

    Adjunct Professor of World Geography

Taught world geography using simulations as well as texts. Also mentored and discipled young Christian men, as well as conducted Bible studies for members of the APU football team.
