Professor of English and Philosophy at Tunxis Community College

J.I.
Abbot
Hartford, Connecticut Area
J.I. ABBOT is an author, college professor, and motivational speaker. His essays, poems, literary translations, reviews, and other writings have appeared in Philosophy and Breaking Bad (Palgrave Macmillan, 2017), Writing from the New Coast (SUNY Buffalo), Modern Poems on the Bible, Parabola, Tricycle, and numerous other publications. He holds an MFA in Literary Arts from Brown University––where he also studied Sanskrit and Indian poetics––and teaches English and philosophy full-time at Tunxis Community College.

As an academic, Abbot specializes in comparative philosophy and literature, with special emphasis in Indo-Tibetan traditions. His areas of research and writing are the philosophy of religion, philosophy of science, poetics and aesthetics, political philosophy, and the law and literature movement.

Abbot's Not Coaching™ retreats and seminars integrate potent principles of aesthetics, listening, spaciousness, and receptivity with more traditional approaches to business communications that center on being assertive. His new Success from Silence™ retreats offer customized guidance for international executives, students, teachers, academics, and others.

Working in high-stakes business environments years ago, Abbot noticed that many of the most successful businesspeople in fact bring a high level of poetic finesse to their communications. His seminars and retreats explicitly model how to synthesize strategic business "subtraction"—pausing, giving space, retreating momentarily, reflecting––and strategic business "addition": acting decisively, "being an executive" or executing, taking initiative.
