During this time period I worked on the merger between the former Departments of Horicultural and Crop Science and the Horticultural Research Institute of Ontario (a Provincial government research branch). The three administrative heads of th units lead the merger team. The merger brought together 45 faculty
two strong graduate programs and many accomplished researchers into the new Department of Plant Agriculture. The foundations laid during the merger process helped to create one of the largest and most successful plant science departments in North America.

The University of Guelph has just completed a very successful Program Priortization Process (PPP). During this process all of the activities(academic and non-academic) of the University were described using specially designed program templates which were then reviewed by a 21 member Taskforce. The scoring and ranking of the program templates was done by the Taskforce and then this information was used to inform budget decisions.

The Gosling Research Institute in Plant Preservation (GRIPP) was formed due to the vision and generosity of Philip and Susan Gosling. The mandate of GRIPP is to preserve rare and endangered species using tissue culture methods and cryopreservation. Research work was first started on the American Elm and resulted in the successful cloning of this species. This is the first step in the reintroduction of this species into temperate parts of the world. The Institute has since started work on several other species and has built strong international ties to botanical gardens and other research labs working in this area. \nGRIPP is currently lead by Dr. Praveen Saxena who was appointed as the first Gosling Chair in Plant Preservation.
