Professor Vlahu likes to teach and is always there to answer questions. However, most of the time she talks about random things and looses her chain of thought, it feels like you are lost in the middle of her lectures. Plus she sometimes chooses the hard way to explain things. It can be really tiring.

Vlahu, PhD
Canada
Applied math PhD, passionate about finding original quantitive solutions to real-life problems with a keen interest to mentor others and learn new techniques as demonstrated by research results in multidisciplinary setting and diverse teaching experience. Excellent communicator and public speaker able to address both technical and non-technical audiences as done at numerous conferences, conventions and public fora.

Experience

  • University of Saskatchewan

    Lecturer

Designed and delivered courses in Linear Algebra, pre-Calculus, and Euclidean Geometry to over 200 students and successfully managed a team of markers and teaching assistants.

  • University of Saskatchewan

    Lecturer

Delivered Integral Calculus to over 80 students in a coordinated team setting.

  • University of Saskatchewan

    PHD Student

Developed novel, customizable, fast transforms for the representation and analysis of discrete data that follow some continuous function (such as sound waves or images), together with fast algorithms for numerical implementation (in Matlab).

Demonstrated ability to work in a multidisciplinary setting, providing mathematical solutions to problems emerging from engineering.

Exercised strong communication skills by presenting research results to numerous scientific conferences.

  • University of Saskatchewan

    Teaching Assistant

Delivered weekly tutorials in a multitude of undergraduate courses to over 2000 students in both Engineering and Arts & Science. Selected courses include Calculus I, II, III, IV, Euclidean Geometry.

Gained indispensable skills in delivering highly technical concepts in non-technical down-to-earth language, appealing to the intuition of the learner rather than background knowledge.

  • American University in Bulgaria

Volunteered to deliver weekly tutorials to over 600 students in Linear Algebra and Finite Mathematics. My method of teaching was extremely well received, as evidenced by the significant increase in success rate, from roughly 50% passing the courses to over 90%.

  • Self-Employed

    Mathematics Educator

Organized and delivered professional training in Quantitative Methods in Economics (Linear programming, Markov chains, Game theory, Transportation problems).

  • Graduate Students' Association, University of Saskatchewan

President and General Manager (Elected Position)

Obtained strong leadership skills by representing graduate students, as an elected representative, in a multitude of University committees, as well as committees within the student organization. In particular, I served on the Presidential Search Committee that appointed the current President of the University of Saskatchewan.

Gained public speaking skills by delivering monthly reports on the activities of the Association and graduate student issues in public fora such as the University Council, the University Academic Assembly, as well as media outlets.

Proved to posses strong managerial skills by effectively directing the Executive committee, the staff, and the organization in general, as evidenced by the successful completion of the first professional audit, the timely delivery of detailed monthly updates to the Board of Directors, the implementation of new services.

Gained invaluable organization and fundraising skills by organizing various student events such as conferences, competitions, social events.

  • Graduate Students' Association, University of Saskatchewan

    Vice President Academic (Elected Position)

Proved emotional intelligence and strategic thinking by mentoring and advocating for students facing academic challenges and/or disciplinary consequences.
