  I served as the \"informed\" community member of the medical IRB board. Members of the committee reviewed medical research proposals (categorized as cancer protocols and non-cancer protocols) to ensure patient safety and appropriate ethical standards. As the informed community member

  I was charged with making sure informed consent protocols were clear to average (non-medical) readers

  including patients and families.
