Good
Professor Savage did a great job with this class. He's the nicest guy, so if you're having trouble then reach out to him. There is a crazy amount of assignments throughout the semester, so not one individual one makes or breaks you. That being said, consistency is key to getting an A or B. There are no exams, but still plenty of time to be invested.

The Healthcare Leadership Academy (HLA) is founded on the premise that the future of academic health systems will be led and managed by clinicians and executives who operate at the frontiers of medicine and possess the leadership skills required to guide their organization into an increasingly complex future.\n\nThe purpose of the HLA is to establish a cohesive and comprehensive program that offers training opportunities and helps develop essential skills for leaders in the 21st century academic health center. In part
this will be accomplished by providing present and future leaders with a broader understanding of the responsibilities as leaders
new perspective on critical leadership and managerial issues they face
and a deeper understanding and awareness of concepts and techniques relevant to management.\n\nObjectives: \n\n * Identify and develop future leaders of the UAB Academic Health Center;\n * Enhance and expand participants' leadership abilities and managerial skills;\n * Facilitate development of strategic thinking skills that focus on the opportunities and challenges facing academic health centers;\n * Understand the history and operations of the health system and the academic health center;\n * Allow participants an opportunity to examine their individual aspirations

Annual Review of Health Care Management: Strategy and Policy Perspectives on Reforming Health Systems
System wide health reform has become the norm across the globe
forcing health care delivery organizations to critically examine the ways in which they are structured and operate on a day to day basis. Resource scarcity has become common while at the same time
quality and clinical outcomes become the basis upon which these organizations are measured and compared with one another. This volume of \"Advances in Health Care Management\" includes contributions from key academic thought leaders from around the world who critically examine how health reform impacts the macro
meso and micro level strategy and policy decisions of healthcare organizations.
Annual Review of Health Care Management: Strategy and Policy Perspectives on Reforming Health Systems
Since the late 1980s
health systems and health organizations have undergone dramatic changes in organizational structure
systems
and processes. These changes included the development of large
integrated health organizations
designed to provide scale and scope advantages
improve the quality of care and health outcomes
and provide greater bargaining power relative to payers and large employers. These efforts resulted in consolidation and restructuring of health systems and physician-health organizations
and dramatic changes in relationships and practices between hospitals and physicians as a means of improving financial and clinical outcomes. However
the scope and nature of this transition has created greater complexity and size in consolidated health systems
leading to greater interest in both industry and academia about hospitals and health systems as complex systems. Evidence on the effectiveness of these efforts
however
has been limited and inconclusive. This volume of Advances in Health Care Management explores the latest theory and research evidence on hospital-physician integration from leading researchers and thought leaders in the field
and points to important new directions on design and management of these organizations as the health care field evolves through industry restructuring and substantive regulatory change.
Annual Review of Health Care Management: Revisiting the Evolution of Health Systems Organization
Hannes Leroy (guest editor)
Tony Simons (guest editor)
To lead health care organizations in ways that enable their continued viability in terms of both health and economic outcomes
health care leaders often feel drawn to take a pragmatic managerial perspective – with its emphasis on day-to-day production pressures and its need to respond to small and large problems. Yet
this tendency can limit their ability to engage in the visionary leadership activities that may help transform their organizations for the future. For example
health care workers face an increasing multitude of job demands: patient care but also administration
cost-efficiency
optimal staffing
leading to role ambiguity
and even role conflict (Katz-Navon
Naveh
& Stern
2009). Facing role conflict
most people experience stress and may be less effective in both primary and secondary role responsibilities. For this reason
conflicting role demands increase the importance of leadership as a means of helping managers and providers make thoughtful and consistent choices between competing values (Leroy et al.
2012).
