Personal Role: Participant/Undergraduate Commentary\nDates: May 11-13
2015 \nLocation: National Academy of Sciences 2101 Constitution Avenue NW Washington
DC 20418. Official Submitted Document: Poster (Machado & Manier)\nMisc: More participants than listed above\n\nBackground: The convocation was the result of a collaboration between the National Academy of Sciences and the National Research Council . The conference was audio and video recorded. Convocation manuscripts
results
and discussions will be typed up and shared with the President’s Council of Advisor’s on Science and Technology (PCAST) as a result of their 2012 report
“Engage and Excel” which cited
“advocate and provide support for the replacing of standard laboratory courses with discovery-based research courses.” The idea is for student’s to be able to take ownership of projects
engaging students in a more authentic scientific training (repeating classical experiments with known outcomes is far less pedagogically sound compared to discovery-based research). Members of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and American Association for the Advancement of Science were also present. The stated meeting goal was: “to pool our experiences
producing a report that will be useful to faculty and administrators considering introducing more research into their undergraduate curriculum.”
