Aagard
Hilliard, Ohio
I am a highly creative Mechanical Engineer who loves to learn and work with people. I started my career in CAD with a software company doing technical sales. Today I am still selling. But my prospective buyers are students who are new in their engineering journey. I use my engineering work experience to inspire, teach, and motivate. I have become adept at explaining technical concepts to non-technical people.

Experience

  • Honda Research and Design Center, North Americas

    Designer

Worked as a part of a cross-disciplinary team to design beautiful and functional dashboards, ergonomic and functional center consoles, and elegant comfortable passenger side panels for both Acura and Honda vehicles.
    • Designed with CATIA 3D CAD to create CAD models for production and created blueprints for production parts.
    • Coordinated with suppliers/vendors/factory to optimize and improve current designs.
    • Contributed to a multidisciplinary team that designed the interior for the Acura ZDX.
    • Produced working production drawings for parts of Odssey, MDX, TSX, and other vehicles.
    • Benchmarked and researched competitors and other sources for design inspiration nd improvement.

  • The Ohio State University

    Graduate Assistant

    • I taught outstanding "Design for Non-Designers" course for non-majors. I educated students from other majors about many facets of design and taught a basic background on modern design and it's philosophy.
    • I taught a much sought after "Color for Design" class for majors/non-majors and received the highest instructor rating possible.

  • Columbus State Community College

    Mechanical Engineering Instructor

I teach AutoCAD, AutoDESK Inventor, and SolidWORKS to Mechanical Engineering Technology Students (the hands-on area of mechanical engineering). I also teach mechanisms, kinematics, and basic hydraulics and pneumatics to students who will service a variety of equipment and machines.

I have merged my technical and design skills to do a great deal of instructional design. I use much of the Apple software suite, as well as most of the Adobe software suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, etc) to create interactive, theory soaked, movies and modules to teach and enhance classes. Additionally, I do all the graphic design for these handouts, papers, flyers, and logos.

I also draw on my work experience as an engineer to give real world examples and job situations to my classes. This makes it more palatable, enjoyable, and entertaining for students. My nomination last year for the outstanding educator of the year and comments on my student reviews like, "...the best teacher on campus..." tell me I'm headed in the right direction.

My job also lets me do a fair amount of coaching as most students at CSCC are in their late twenties and are returning to school for a new career. I encourage and mentor a great deal. I love what I do and am driven to learn more to make my classes better.

Because of the marriage between machine and computers I am now putting more of my time into robotics, PLCs, motors and others programming tools.

  • Arctic Cat

    Industrial Designer

Contract position: to help maintain design schedule for their current project
    • Concept sketching of snowmobile hood and body. Preliminary layout designs for plastic body parts.
•, Unigraphics CAD modeling of plastic injection parts: windshield, front hood, ports, handlebars, etc.
    • Teamed with mechanical engineering to assure fit and function of package design, engine placement, and porting.
    • Timely delivery of modeled parts to ensure design schedule continuity.

  • ITT Technical Institute

    Design Instructor

I was the jack-of-all-trades for a variety of courses in the design major.
    • I taught and tutored in labs and assisted students with homework and design projects.
    • Courses included: Graphic Design, Design Principles, and User-Centered-Design.
    • I coached students on career choices and technical courses of study.
    • Taught many of the Adobe basic suite: Inventor, Photoshop, Illustrator and Indesign.
    • Taught AutoCAD, Inventor, and SolidWorks, and technical writing.
    • Mentored mentored students through their final design project(s) and tutor students in moving through ITT's bachelor's program.

Education

  • The Ohio State University

    MFA

    Industrial Design
My industry experience in engineering prompted me to research color in product design and marketing|communication. Because of some work with the medical industry I was interested in how color was used in the medical world. My research culminated in my thesis: "A Pre-Design Scrubs Color Exploration" studying the how medical professional's clothing color effects patient perception. (bottom line: medical professionals should never wear black or red) • Studied Industrial, Graphic, and Interactive Design. • I taught classes in Color Theory and Design to Undergraduates • I gained great experience in sketching, drawing, painting, and digital layout to aid my ability to create design solutions for a variety of clients. - researched and wrote thesis
