Deconstructing Support Inadequacy: Unique Effects of Support Deficit and Surplus on Relationship Characteristics and Interaction Perceptions
The goal of the study was to assess the effects of support inadequacy
when the level of support provided is either more than desired (a surplus) or is less than desired (a deficit). We predicted both forms of inadequacy would influence global relationship qualities and perceptions of enacted support in a specific interaction with a dating partner. Participants (N = 103) reported their desired and actual support received from their partner in general. They also rated their partner’s supportive behavior in an interaction. Results showed that emotional support inadequacy was negatively related to relational quality
positively associated with relational turbulence
and lead to reduced perceptions of partner supportiveness for men. Contrary to expectations
inadequate informational support was positively associated with relationship quality and negatively related to relational turbulence
but also predicted less emotional improvement. Avoidance inadequacy led to greater perceived stress.
