Biography

Governors State University - Education

Enthusiastic, Engaging Practitioner, University Lecturer and Educational Curriculum Consultant at Silver Services, LTD
Ellen
Silver-Horrell
Homewood, Illinois
I am a multiply-licensed educator and practitioner currently providing lecturer and consultative services in early childhood, elementary, middle, post-secondary, special, and higher education. I am an 'over'-achiever and life-long learner with outstanding written and engaging presentation skills. My career is constructed from a wide array of powerful, highly successful teaching experiences, which include providing culturally, ethnically, racially, linguistically, and socioeconomically diverse prek-20 students with a literacy-rich, active, learner-centered education. I am a creative, flexible, dedicated constructivist who welcomes innovation and new challenges to providing highly effective student educational services. My research interests are: cutting-edge technology integration, culturally relevant pedagogy, effective research-based teacher preparation practices, and using andragogy and best practices in adult education, and continuous post-secondary professional development. I have an easily discernable passion for interacting with, learning with, and learning from others as I proceed with this phase of my professional journey in education.

Specialties: I have the unique skill set required to translate pedagogical theory successfully into learner-friendly practical applications, to model approaches appropriate to adult learners’ experiential needs for meaningful learning, to use "hands-on" coaching and mentoring of pre-service and practicing teachers effectively, as well as to provide tailor-made professional development and customized curricular design and learning materials.

Many students struggle with learning APA 6th Edition formatting requirements for teacher candidates. So on my own accord, I work with students individually to teach them the stages of the writing process and how to revise and re-edit their work. I have also helped students lean how to take notes and how to better gain comprehension of what they read in course textbooks and in research studies. Later in their programs, students come back to me and thank me for deepening their understanding of what they read and for insisting that they can learn how to write clearly and concisely in a scholarly manner.
