Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
I am finishing my dissertation
an environmental history of the lower Arkansas River. Through the lens of environmental history
with a focus on the Arkansas River
we better understand how the river’s characteristics and tendencies influenced Arkansans to use and manipulate the river to gain and maintain power over others. The flow of the river
or the lack thereof
caused the space within the river valley
especially the river’s bed
to be politicized while altering not only the current of life within the river valley but often sent ripples of change throughout the state
surrounding region
and at times the globe. Moreover
I posit that nature and culture on the river are interlaced creating a hybrid environment consisting of pre-manmade conditions with human alterations. \n
