Tread Softly: Bullying
and the Death of Phoebe Prince
EJ Fleming
This book
for which I served as editor
chronicles the life and death of Phoebe Prince
a young woman from Ireland who relocated to South Hadley
Massachusetts in the summer of 2009. What followed was an unimaginable bullying campaign carried out by six of her peers. On a January afternoon
after seventeen weeks of constant harassment
Phoebe put herself beyond the reach of her tormentors when she hanged herself with a scarf her younger sister had given to her for Christmas. It ultimately came together into a narrative that discusses for the first time how Phoebe’s story was influenced by an ethos of bullying among her peers
the school administration
the town of South Hadley
and dozens of individuals with the power to stop everything who in the end did nothing.
