Sentiment Analysis or the analysis of messages received from individuals and leadership from organizations
about their feelings on a specific topic or issue is not new. Researchers have relied on sentiment analysis through focus groups
surveys
community 2 advisory boards
opinion pieces by peers published in industry journals
and other mass media in order to gauge support for research activities and to gauge consumer/patient satisfaction. Businesses have used sentiment analysis to test brand and product satisfaction and dissatisfaction. Consumers/patients now freely provide this feedback on thousands of Internet websites
including online news sites
blogs
personal websites
social networking sites
and other social media. The new definition of sentiment analysis includes the collection of content messages from websites and social media outlets and the use of powerful statistical techniques and linguistics rules to determine sentiment expressed and using these sentiments to identify trends
provide communities with summaries
create graphical reports related to the feelings of consumers/patients
in a real-time manner and providing this information to communities for increased engagement. With the right algorithms and intelligence dashboards
researchers can gather an infinite number of comments about a particular research interest rather than relying on small returns on survey tools and small focus group data. Social media influencers are any individual who sends a message through social media that can have an impact on the formulation of ideas and/or practices. These comments make for a fertile or barren environment for the introduction of clinical research
medical treatment
or public health interventions
considering the presence of the Federal government
for-profit and nonprofit health care providers
community-based public health providers
activist and consumer advocacy groups
and individual consumers/patients all in the same online world.
