Biography

Thomas M. Cooley Law School Grand Rapids - Law

Negotiate and structure complex agreements with a sense of urgency.
Don
Petersen
I represent investors and entrepreneurs in a wide range of sophisticated commercial transactions. I have a deep understanding of business that reflects my experience, my degrees, and teaching economics for many years as an adjunct, including at Harvard. I have also taught secured transactions, negotiation, legal writing, sports law, and property law -- and I was twice named Professor of the Year at the nation’s largest law school. I am admitted to practice law in IL, MI, and TX.

I remain one of the nation’s leading experts in Article 9 of the Uniform Commercial Code. I have extensive experience speaking before small and large groups as a lawyer, as a professor, and as a stand-up comic.

Experience

    Education

    • The University of Chicago

      Bachelor's degree

      Economics
I had a 4.0 gpa in courses in my economics major. I earned every available honor, culminating with election to the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. I wrote a paper on the professional baseball player's labor market.

    • Harvard Law School

      Doctor of Law (J.D.)

      Law
While attending law school, I taught 1-3 economics courses each term (i) to undergraduate students attending Harvard College, and (ii) to graduate students in the International Tax Program of Harvard Law School. I wrote about the anti-trust implications inherent in the four major professional sports leagues, baseball, hockey, football, and basketball.

    • Second City Conservatory

      Graduate

      Improvisational Comedy
I went through the entire 5-step improvisational comedy program, which took nearly two years. For me, it was far more difficult than Harvard Law School. Over 120 students started in the program, but only five of us graduated. Yes, it was "comedy," but I analogize it to boot-camp (with apologies to those who went through real boot-camp). During the upper levels, we would usually gather five nights a week for class or practice. There were tears and there were fights. But after our final performance of Jesus Chrysler Supercar, there was a sense of accomplishment. We had made it. And I will always love you guys . . .

This is where I figured out how hard I had to work to be successful. I matured an incredible amount.
