Making it or Breaking It? A Scalable Framework for Faculty Development in Active Learning Classrooms
U.S. Universities are embracing innovative use of active learning spaces to maximize student learning. Publications in this field tends to focus on\na. How active learning spaces are built\nb. How well active learning spaces support students in their learning\nIt remains important to share innovations on implementing active learning spaces and documenting the effects learning spaces have on student success
faculty who teach in active learning spaces can make or break the learning. Without motivated faculty who want to take full advantage of active learning
the spaces themselves can impede learning.\nHow do we both support the first wave of early adopters and introduce the majority of faculty to active learning? Faculty support becomes crucial in introducing any faculty to learning and teaching differently. At Auburn University
the Engaged and Active Student Learning (EASL) spaces are moving from a pilot stage to a full-blown campus wide implementation through the university’s commitment to building at least three new learning facilities that are grounded in active learning. Faculty across multiple colleges will be able to take advantage of the new spaces
compelling\nthe university to provide a comprehensive and scalable faculty support system for redesigning courses to be taught in the EASL spaces through summer programs while offering short active learning workshops embedded through the year to provide colleagues with multiple opportunities to re-evaluate the learning and teaching in the EASL spaces in a supportive
ongoing cohort of active learning champions. The framework combines a backward course design process as well as\nhelping faculty become expert mobile facilitators
craft “active learning expectation” syllabus statements
and pen effective real-world problem scenarios to amplify student learning and faculty vitality in active learning classrooms.\n
