David J. Thomas, Ph.D. has a wide variety of professional experience in disability resources and services, physical and programmatic accessibility and regulatory compliance, risk management, and academic and student affairs. He is not only a disability advocate and scholar, but he remains active on the faculty, having over a decade of university teaching experience. He is a disability advocate and applied sociolinguist and educational sociologist who has conducted field research and presented on the intersection of disability, education, and culture as well as legal and regulatory compliance across North America, Europe, and Asia.
Dr. Thomas serves as the Associate Director for Student Services in Disability Resources and Services at Temple University, where he holds an appointment as an Adjunct Assistant Professor of English. He is also the Higher Education and Accessible Design Principal for Independence Access Associates, LLC. Previously, he has taught on the English faculties of universities in Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington state.
Dr. Thomas currently serves on the Board of Directors of Disability Rights Pennsylvania as Treasurer, where he also chairs the Mental Health Advisory Council. He also serves on the Board of Directors of Delta Alpha Pi International Honor Society, which recognizes high performing college and university students with disabilities. Dr. Thomas is a non-affiliated, scientific member of the IRB at the University of the Sciences and on the Research Review Panel of The Association on Higher Education and Disability.
Dr. Thomas holds a PhD in Education, Higher Education, an MA in Applied Linguistics, a BA in Individualized Integrative Studies in Dramaturgy and a Graduate Certificate in TESOL from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA. He studied at the NC School of the Arts, the LSA Institute at Stanford University, the University of the Arts and the Institute on Disability at Temple University.

Under Federal regulations, the IRB is an appropriately constituted group that has been formally designated to review and monitor biomedical research involving human subjects. The IRB has the authority to approve, require modifications in (to secure approval), or disapprove research. This group review serves an important role in the protection of the rights and welfare of human research subjects.
