Exhibition: "Dürer's Women: Image of Devotion & Desire"
"Dürer’s Women: Images of Devotion and Desire" featured over 50 prints from the Cleveland Museum of Art’s distinguished collection of German artist Albrecht Dürer’s work and explored the artist’s diverse representations of women executed over the course of his career. Whether their subjects are religious or worldly, Dürer’s prints of women rank among his most captivating. Each image expresses varying degrees of feminine authority and power ranging from the benevolent Virgin Mary to influential goddesses, amorous maidens, and rustic housewives, among others. While the meanings of some representations are explicit, the ambiguities of others, particularly those that feature female nudity, often encourage multiple interpretations. Importantly, Dürer’s progressive prints of women are not simply commentaries regarding the roles of and attitudes towards women in the 16th century, but rather serve as vehicles for broader theological, philosophical, and moralistic notions from the period.
Since the last exhibition devoted to Dürer’s work at the CMA occurred 22 years ago, "Dürer’s Women" provided a wonderful opportunity for viewers to enjoy the popular and less well-known engravings, woodcuts, and etchings of this accomplished artist.
