Good

I took Prof. Watanabe for Spring 2020. I wasn't actually a fan of writing so I was kinda worried but he really made it easier. Most parts of the sem was spent mainly on assignments that help lead you up to screenplay. It's about 25 pages but the work he gives the entire sem really help you out with it, so it wasn't so hard, just quite time consuming.

Biography

Los Angeles Valley College - Media Arts

Instructor and guest lecturer on all things entertainment in the LA Region.
Dan
Watanabe
North Hollywood, California
Following nearly twenty years in the entertainment industry, I am now firmly ensconced in academia, with the goal of providing students with the training necessary to have a career in digital media of all kinds.

I have just finished a five-year stint as the "deputy sector navigator" (meaning someone who bridges employers with education) as part of the "Doing What Matters" initiative. My particular focus was on Digital Media (including entertainment) handling the 19 community colleges and multiple high schools in the LA region. The purpose of the grant is to build career pathways from K-12 into the community colleges; then from the community colleges into four-year institutions; culminating in providing jobs skills for students to enter the workforce. It also provides a path for incumbent workers to return to education to "skill up" to achieve higher wages or career changes. During the five years of the grant, we trained over 5,700 students, 1,000 faculty members, 1,000 incumbent workers and have worked with over 100 industry partners.

Additionally, I teach a variety of classes at LA Valley College, including screenwriting, the production process and the history of television. Since September 2013, I also teach in the television studies department at Loyola Marymount University.

For sixteen years I worked at the company ultimately known as FremantleMedia, handling "current programming" duties on a number of first run syndication television series (including BAYWATCH), movies of the week, and reality/game shows.

In September, 2017, I finally received my MFA (at my age!) in Digital Cinema Production. Fun times for a former front office type.
