I've been deeply involved with hardware electronics design since I've been about ten, when my parents bought me a Radio Shack 10-in-1 kit. From that beginning I've worked on a wide range of projects including both hardware and embedded software, the most recent being my open-source ChipWhisperer project that helps to make advanced embedded security attacks accessible. This project aims to revolutionize this field by offering a complete open-source toolchain, along with tutorials and even hardware that can be purchased on Mouser. I co-founded NewAE Technology Inc., to make this project more widely accessible, and have now sold over 1000 ChipWhisperer-Lites along with many other products which have been used in universities, research labs, commercial companies validating their products, and governments.
Assistant Professor
Colin worked at Dalhousie University as a Assistant Professor
PhD in Electrical Engineering
Having seen first-hand how security is added to embedded systems (or more accurately, how often it is NOT added), I set out to improve the overall understanding in industry of the reality of attacks against embedded systems. During my PhD I developed the ChipWhisperer, the world's first open-source tool-chain for side-channel power analysis attacks. I also ran a capture the flag (CTF) for CHES2016, gave many talks at Black Hat/DEFCON/other conferences, and ran several tutorial sessions.
Lecturer
I've been responsible for teaching 2 different courses at Dalhousie. Over summer 2015 I taught the 'robot design course', which takes 3rd year students through a complete electronics design. I also taught a 2nd year digital electronics course twice.
Electrical Engineering Consultant
Working on a variety of projects around 802.15.4, mostly working on 6LoWPAN related work.
Engineering Consultant
Consultant on FPGA design mostly, also some DSP programming along with environmental testing.
CTO
Having spun NewAE Technology out of my PhD research, I've been working as the main R&D engineer for their products, along with long-term planning of future projects and products.
