SKOWHEGAN IS AN INTENSIVE NINE-WEEK SUMMER RESIDENCY PROGRAM FOR EMERGING VISUAL ARTISTS ESTABLISHED IN 1946.\nSkowhegan seeks each year to bring together a diverse group of individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to artmaking and inquiry
creating the most stimulating and rigorous environment possible for a concentrated period of artistic creation
interaction and growth. Located on a historic 350 acre farm in rural Maine
the campus serves as a critical component of the program.\n\nNeither a school in the traditional sense nor a retreat
Skowhegan draws its vitality from the community created through the talent and energy of the participants
and the distinguished Faculty of Resident and Visiting Artists who provide them with support and critical assistance. Founded by artists
and still governed by artists
the program provides an atmosphere in which participants are encouraged to work free of the expectations of the marketplace and academia.

Drawing is the backbone of art and design; with all of the tantalizing wonders of the digital world
the best designers
illustrators and artists know that it’s good to step back occasionally and hit the refresh button on your hand and mind. Playing with Sketches is a hands-on
fun approach to exploring drawing principles. Beginning with an introduction to the philosophy of learning through the process of play
this book brings you through a series of basic warm-up exercises that can be combined with later projects. Then you’ll move quickly on to more challenging and engaging exercises
including word games
dimensional shapes
and inventive sketchbooks and letterforms
eventually creating a “toolkit” of ideas and skills developed through the process of play. This book features creative
adaptable ideas
and numerous examples of designers and artists responses to each exercise
giving you a peek into their way of thinking and seeing.\n\nWith over 25 contributors
from high-profile designers
illustrators and artists to talented graduate students
you see work that will walk you step-by-step through a process or inspire by example. The book provides meaningful outcomes for your practice
including building an image archive
being exposed to new ways to use media and tools
inspiring you to break the rules
to collaborate
and much more!

One of the two main components of a student’s course of study in the Visual Art program at Vermont College of Fine Arts is a semester-long studio project in which the student develops and/or challenges specific aspects of their art practice under the guidance of an Artist-Teacher who lives and works in the student’s community. As an artist-teacher for two students of the VCFA MFA Program
I held individual studio meetings with students to identify and expand their studio practices and guided their research by offering resources catered to their projects. Concluding the role as artist-teacher
I provided extensive written feedback for their academic and professional development.
