Aultman Watershed Association for Restoring the Environment (AWARE)
Aultman Pennsylvania
Non-profit Organization founded in 2000 by local citizens who felt compelled to clean up Aultmans Run Watershed. Covering 28 square miles
the area includes lands managed by Pennsylvania Game Commission and Army Corps of Engineers has abundant potential as a habitat and recreation corridor. Unfortunately
this is undermined by pollution and hazards typical of areas with extensive historic mining activities. \nAWARE has made great strides forward with several passive coal remediation activities completed and ongoing within the watershed. Over ten years
AWARE has received more than half a million dollars in grant funding for our initiatives. Currently we are actively engaged in developing Rails to Trails recreational opportunities on abandoned railways within the watershed. The Rails to Trails project is an exciting opportunity as it has the potential to link Aultman Watershed to the greater Pennsylvania Rail Trail system.
