I am a historian of early modern Europe, and I enjoy teaching a variety of courses, including a core curriculum stretching from antiquity through our present-day global modernity, as well as electives on topics such as the history of Catholicism in Asia, the French Revolution, and early modern religious culture.
My current book project focuses on cultures of vocation in seventeenth-century France, especially young people's choices of a state of life (marriage, the clerical state, or religious vows). Through the study of past understandings of what it means to be called to a stable commitment, we can better equip ourselves to answer questions about freedom, social order, and the purpose and place of individuals in communities.
I also serve as Christendom's Director of Fellowship Advising, helping students to identify and apply for competitive study and service opportunities such as the Fulbright program and the Critical Language Scholarship.

Could freedom to choose marriage or a religious vocation be reconciled with parental involvement in that choice? In seventeenth-century France, clerical advice to young adults on choosing a state of life navigated the tension between a theological commitment to liberty and societal norms of parental authority.
