My dissertation focused on the role of exercise in the development of approach motivation tendencies. A 8-week experimental design introduced previously sedentary college students to a brisk walking intervention (30 minutes per day
4 times per week
8 weeks). After 8 weeks
participants reported significant improvement on measures of exercise self efficacy
general self-efficacy
and global approach motivation. Additionally
a process model indicated a good fit for the data with partially mediating paths from exercise self-efficacy to exercise approach motivation and general self-efficacy
then to global approach motivation. \n

Running Flow
Phil Latter
Mihalyi Csikszentmihalyi
Ask any serious runner and they’ll tell you that being mentally sound is vital to success in the sport. The ability to enter a flow state of mind is something that Dr. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi has devoted his entire career to understanding.\n\nIn Running Flow
Dr. Csikszentmihalyi is joined by fellow psychologist Christine Weinkauff Duranso and running journalist and coach Philip Latter. This landmark work is the first book dedicated to helping runners achieve the state of flow in competitive and training environments. You’ll find comprehensive coverage of the phenomenon
unique practice exercises that stimulate its occurrence
and firsthand accounts from elite runners about their flow experiences.\n\nThe psychological barriers associated with training and competition can be as demanding as the physical ones. Destined to become a running classic
Running Flow will open your mind not only to better performance but also to a better
healthier
and more enjoyable experience.
Running Flow
While an empirical eye has focused on largely descriptive analyses for optimism
wisdom and resiliency
all beneficial in the face of challenge
considering ways in which optimal responses to difficulties might be promoted seems to have been left in the periphery. The purpose of this discussion is to consider the potential for flow as a moderating agent for stressful events and benefit finding or posttraumatic growth.

Dissertation: Does Regular Exercise Contribute to Approach Motivation? A Study of Exercise and Nature with Emerging Adults
Dissertation data collection is complete. This research investigates the role of exercise in the development of resilience
with approach motivational tendencies as the measure of resilient processes. Nature is being considered as a moderator of the relationship between exercise and approach motive tendencies. This study will use an 8-week exercise intervention. Comparisons will be made between people who currently exercise
people who do not exercise and people who previously did not exercise but participated in the 8 week exercise intervention. Pre and post tests will allow for between and within subject analyses.

Hispanic College Students and Stress: How A Walking Intervention Reduces Stress Perception
From previously collected data
I am working with a graduate student at CSUSB to prepare a manuscript for publication in a peer reviewed journal. Our data suggests that an 8-week walking intervention with Hispanic college freshman significantly reduces the perception of stress over the course of an academic quarter. Results also suggest that walking outdoors has an even stronger influence
for the better
on stress perception
than walking indoors.
