Dr. Christa J. Porter is an Assistant Professor of Higher Education Administration at Kent State University. Her primary line of inquiry examines the development and trajectory of Black women in higher education at diverse institutional types. Specifically, she explores identity development and socialization processes of Black college women and faculty. Additional lines of inquiry include college student development and research and praxis in higher education and student affairs. Before Kent State, she served four years as a Fixed term Assistant Professor and Coordinator of the Student Affairs Administration master’s program at Michigan State University. Prior to joining the academy, she worked in various student affairs offices at multiple institutional types.
Dr. Porter is active in professional associations, namely ACPA – College Student Educators International, ASHE – Association for the Study of Higher Education, and NASPA – Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education, and has received national awards for her scholarship and teaching. Most recently in 2019, she received the College of Education, Health and Human Services’ inaugural Students' Choice Teaching Award (nominated and selected by students); in 2018, she was recognized as one of ACPA’s Annuit Coeptis Emerging Professionals, and in 2017 was selected as one of ACPA’s five Emerging Scholars.
Dr. Porter received her Ph.D. in Counseling and Student Personnel Services (with a specialization in College Student Affairs Administration) and an Interdisciplinary Qualitative Research Studies Certificate from the University of Georgia in 2013, a Master’s degree in Higher Education from the University of Maryland, College Park in 2006, and a Bachelor’s degree in Social Relations and Policy from James Madison College of Public Affairs and International Relations at Michigan State University in 2004.

Coordinate admissions and recruitment of potential SAA masters students (e.g., application review process (350+ applications annually), Spartan Preview Days, national and local Graduate School Fairs, correspondence with interested students)
Manage assistantships, hourly employment, and practicum experiences of 45+ masters students; partner with student and academic affairs units on and off campus to create, assess, and enhance student experiences
Advise first and second year SAA masters students
Evaluate doctoral comprehensive examinations
Provide core and elective instruction to Masters and Doctoral students within SAA and HALE curricula and across disciplines
