Speaking to a packed house at Ben Franklin Institute of Technology for his official campaign kickoff event, Clinton White House appointee, President & CEO of Leading Cities, and Democratic candidate for Lieutenant Governor Mike Lake discussed his vision for the role as "Chief Marketing Officer" for the Commonwealth, noting that Massachusetts is in a global economy and "must be competitive in that global arena." Beyond discussing his international business credentials and his inspiring personal narrative of growing up the son of a high school-educated young widow, Lake discussed his campaign theme of what he refers to as the "Massachusetts Promise of opportunity that comes with high-quality education, job creation, and strong communities."

Much like everyone else out there who is a sane and rational person with a conscience and a heart, I was mortified as the news trickled in. I thought about friends who were running today, who were on the lines for support, or who were at parties in the area. I thought about my college students who were probably down there just looking for something fun on a day off.

Spending a few (surprisingly sunny) days in Dublin, the bustle of this city is striking. Dublin has strongly positioned itself internationally to grow its own tech community with an infusion of foreign-born talent and major-name companies (Google, Facebook, LinkedIn, Yahoo!, Etsy, Indeed, Ancestry.com, Marketo, Dropbox, and HubSpot who was featured here on this a while back...need I go on) anchoring the Grand Canal area and spreading out from there. Here are some observed and gathered musings on what's sparking this resurgence....

A while back we ran in this space what I consider to be a definitive and comprehensive piece on London's Tech City zone from Phil Budden and Fiona Murray. So while in London I had to come see it for myself to put it in it's proper context. And the visual results are thus: Cambridge, Massachusetts, you were clearly onto something with your recipe for the Boston area's tech success.

Great company culture takes time and effort to build up, but it is easy and quick to destroy. A few bad apples, a few botched messages, a few small details overlooked and suddenly your company is the sinking ship that any smart rat is trying to abandon. Whether it’s teaching undergraduates and grad students or working with executives on internal or external communication and business strategies, I tell everyone my first goal is to prevent the critical communication missteps that will make you seem incompetent, or worse - hated! Sadly, it’s rarely that easy. Here are 3 guaranteed ways to screw up a company culture. Don’t say nobody warned you.

Great company culture takes time and effort to build up, but it is easy and quick to destroy. A few bad apples, a few botched messages, a few small details overlooked and suddenly your company is the sinking ship that any smart rat is trying to abandon. Sadly, it’s rarely that easy. Here are 3 guaranteed ways to screw up a company culture. Don’t say nobody warned you.

"In the search for a creative twist on the standard panel discussion and networking event, it seems that great minds in Massachusetts have a convergent interest in flexing their mental muscle against each other on stage. While each format focuses on a specific theme for the night, the variety appears in how these events structure the rules of engagement for their opponents."

Portugal has a bright outlook, and it's not just because of the beautiful weather. In meeting with the business and government community here there was a decided tone of optimism in spite of the bad economic news that is frequently reported. Yes, unemployment here is high (even higher for the young) but that doesn't deter the Portuguese from talking about the startup focused sea change they see coming in the next few years. Here's a snapshot of what's going on at just 3 exciting startup centers:

A while back you may have heard that Boston inbound marketing powerhouse HubSpot was expanding to Ireland. As someone who teaches organizational communication and consults in the field, I am always fascinated to hear how people make adjustments in communicating with the home office and their new international colleagues. I asked my friend and worldwide IT extraordinaire David Gallant how things have been going since he relocated to Dublin, and here's what he answered.

Last summer I had the great fortune of visiting Portugal to get a better understanding of the startup ecosystem there. Since not everyone can go to Portugal to see it up close, thankfully MIT brought a portion of that ecosystem to Cambridge for Wednesday’s MIT International Innovation Symposium.

[Editor's note: I recently had the pleasure of attending a Youth CITIES Monthly Mini-Hack where the serendipity of the Greater Boston innovation ecosystem was on full display. Hosted at the Cambridge Innovation Center just down the hall from the regular Thursday Venture Cafe, it was amazing to watch entrepreneurs of all backgrounds come through the room to observe presentations from kids, asking smart questions and offering gentle guidance and encouragement to the youngest of entrepreneurs. Quoted in Chapter 3: Executing the Six Phases of an Effective Recruiting Process page 30 “The math of replacing members of an organization is rarely in an organization’s favor. Successful companies put great effort into identifying the right candidates, devoting man-hours toward having multiple team members interview candidates. Once they reach a decision to hire they devote time to training and getting the person comfortable with and knowledgeable of the systems already in place. If a company has gone through all that effort once, then why wouldn’t it put more effort into retaining those people rather than constantly having to hunt for their replacements and start from scratch? It’s a much smarter investment of resources to figure out if employees are likely to leave and then do everything in your power to keep them, rather than wait for them to declare that they’re leaving for reasons you could have addressed earlier.”
