Dr. Hicks is one of the original adopters of free and open resources at Wiley College. She first became interested in Open Educational Resources as an Assistant Professor at China Incarnate Word University in Guangzhou, China, a part of the University of Incarnate Word, San Antonio, Texas. Since physical copies of teaching resources in English were hard to come by at China Incarnate Word University, the faculty utilized free and open resources as much as possible. This early exposure to OER’s gave Dr. Hicks an advantage and she served as an early proponent as Wiley College moved to the use of OER’s.
