CHRISTIANE SPITZMUELLER, Ph.D., is Professor of Industrial Organizational Psychology at the University of Houston (UH), where she conducts research and teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in workplace safety, diversity, the work-family interface, and employee development. Her research is focused on three domains:
1) Occupational Safety and Health: How can we create maximally healthy and safe workplaces for employees? What interventions are most likely to have long-term effects on health and well-being? How do work experiences shape the health and well-being of employees and families? How do work experiences contribute to women's decisions to reconcile breastfeeding and working, and what parental work stressors influence child health and well-being?
2) Workforce diversity: What data-driven approaches to recruitment, retention and promotion practices can help employers create a workforce that resembles the overall diversity of a society's population and ascertains innovation and creativity are leveraged?
3) Mentoring and Development: How, when and why can mentorship contribute to effective employee development? What type of mentoring practices can contribute to employee development? How can policies and organizational practices augment effective employee training and development?
Dr. Spitzmueller received her Ph.D. in Industrial and Organizational Psychology from Bowling Green State University and joined the faculty of the University of Houston in 2003, becoming full professor in 2017.
