Fiction and Creative Nonfiction
While at Memphis I served as the Nonfiction
assistant
and managing editor of \"The Pinch\" literary magazine.
Every year it seems another apocalypse is predicted. Every day we hear of the pending global warming disaster. there was Y2K. The next one was the Mayan 2012. Every preacher on television rants and raves about the end of time and the apocalypse and the second coming of Christ. Preacher Harold Camping went so far as to predict the exact day. \n\nDuring the summer of 1990
Iben Browning predicted an apocalyptic earthquake would strike the New Madrid Fault on December 3rd
devastating the heartland from St. Louis to Memphis.\n\n\nIn Delbert
Arkansas
a fictional town along the New Madrid Fault
the people felt other things were more important than an impending apocalypse--like Wink Gaskill's beer permit application for a new local convenience store he was building.\n\nFaydeane Gossett stated the community concerns clearly: \"If we allow him to sell beer
next thing you know we'll have crack houses
whorehouses and casinos on every street corner.\"\n\n\nIn this story collection
the townspeople barrel towards their date with destiny while dealing with infidelity
lust
sexual and domestic abuse
drug addiction
cancer
family histories
bigotry
murder
ambition
sexual preferences
mental illness
loss
failure
religion
mistakes
local gossip
elections and professional wrestling.\n\n\nDespite Iben Browning's prediction of an apocalyptic earthquake
December 3rd
1990 came and went without so much as a tremor
and the town folks breathed a collective sigh of relief and went about returning their generators to Sears for a refund
pouring their cache of gasoline into their trucks and ATV's
eating their Vienna Sausages and Spam and dumping stored gallons of water on their front yards and winter greens.\n\nThey went back to dealing with the every day problems that make a predicted apocalypse seem small in comparison.\n\nFacing a once in a lifetime catastrophic event
the residents of Delbert
Arkansas
prove that the truly apocalyptic events are the ones they face every day.\n
Alligator Stew
This collection of stories resides at the intersection--or collision--of religion and sexuality and the hypocrisy it generates. Here you will find a girl who dreams of being married nude like Adam and Eve
a signed chastity contract
wife-swapping
dope-smoking
a sacred tree
a golden shower tree
a swingers resort
communion crackers made of horny goatweed and Viagara
and a cockfight in the Mexican village of Puerto Moreles
and that is just the first story.
God's Naked Will
Authors are asked every day how do you find material for your stories
or what inspired you to write about such a twisted character? To the last question I usually respond \"Someone I used to know.\" But I thought I would share on my blog the history behind the creative process for each of the stories I have published. Already written and posted on my blog are the histories of the stories in \"God's Naked Will.\" I am now exploring weekly the stories behind the stories of \"Alligator Stew\" after its release.
Alligator Stew\" \"Original Sin\"
Now that \"Alligator Stew is finished and available for pre-order
I look forward to working with Terri Gerrell of Southern yellow Pine Publishing from Tallahassee on my next project--an as yet untitled novel about the traffic of contraband--drugs
chemicals and people--on the Mississippi river. This novel will include characters from both story collections
particularly from the stories \"Alligator Stew
\" \"Flying Lessons
\" and \"Karen.\" I am thrilled to finally be able to have books of my own on the shelves of bookstores! \nPhotographer Jennifer Moore and I also continue to work on a story/photographic essay collection titled \"Original Sin\" we have submitted to a publisher in Europe.

Alligator Stew by CD Mitchell. Published by Southern Yellow Pine Publishing. Official Book trailer. Life is rarely simple. Most of the time it is hard
and frequently unpleasant. These are stories about honest
relatable people living lives in a small
rural
southern town. Each story focuses on parts of life we frequently hide or don't admit exists.
