University of California Berkeley - Sociology
I was born in Transylvania, the Hungarian region of Romania. I spent most of my childhood and early teen years under the shadow of a communist dictator. I arrived to the United States as a political refugee, and tried my hand at nearly every occupation imaginable while completing my high school and undergraduate degrees. Some of my favorites were working in a bookstore and as a counselor and teacher of foster youth, though I also think fondly of the years I worked as a night security guard supervisor, house cleaner, Chinese herbal pharmacist, emergency room coordinator, factory worker, acupuncturist, martial arts instructor and in special education. I also spent nearly 10 years in various leadership positions in the non-profit sector.
Through all my adventures in work and life, I found myself turning to the social sciences in an effort to understand the larger structural forces that shaped my world. My experiences working with marginalized populations led to the realization that my passion lies in socially responsible research and education.
After a foray into Traditional Chinese Medicine, I found my academic home in the joint PhD Program in Sociology and Demography at the University of California, Berkeley.
When not pondering the minutia of time, I love traveling, hiking, photography, painting, rollerblading, playing the didgeridoo, drumming and practicing internal martial arts.

My research interests broadly encompass areas of health, stratification, migration, demography and gender. I am interested in time as a resource, specifically when it comes to how it affects health.
I have also conducted research on:
1) time as a resource in schools in the United States (Python)
2) gender inequality and the pace of life around the world (Python)
3) how ethnic residential segregation affects time availability in the US (R)
4) identifying hidden and hard to reach populations through the use of big data (R)
5) internalizing prejudices (Stata and R)
6) inequalities in the Roma population (R)
7) intergenerational support exchanges between migrants and their aged parents in developing countries (Stata)
8) socioeconomic status and health of the aged in Asia (SPSS)
UC Berkeley School of Law - Form & Fund Fellow
Learned (almost) all about startup law, formed a C-Corp (Timely Inc), sold an app, made a new product (stay tuned for more Timely magic).

Examined the transformation of the country since the apartheid. I focused on how the multiple constitutionally-guaranteed socioeconomic rights are upheld by the various courts and how the rights are conceptualized by the claimants, defendants, lawyers and judges. Instrumental in interview guide construction and text analysis (NVivo and Python).
Research Fellow
Conducted research on how stigmatized minority populations internalize prevalent stereotypes about their own population (R and Stata). Presented this work at multiple domestic and international conferences.
