Blythe
King
Richmond, Virginia
Blythe King is a rising talent who currently breaks new ground in photography, collage, and the ancient art of gold leafing. Born in Pittsburgh in 1977, her work is heavily influenced by two legacies — the whimsical, social commentary of hometown hero Andy Warhol forged with traditional Steel Town resolve. Her multi-layered portraits of women reveal the complexities of female identity. She utilizes a variety of processes including image transfer, photo collage, Zen calligraphy, and gold leafing to transform images of women originally depicted in vintage mail order catalogues. King studied religion and art and received her BA from the University of Richmond and her MA from the University of Colorado. She practiced Zen calligraphy with Stephen Addiss (The Art of Zen). Her art has been exhibited in museums, galleries, and art centers nationwide. King currently works as an artist, art educator, and professor of religious studies.

As the ArtVenture Program Lead, I designed, scheduled, and managed VisArts’ ArtVenture Program from 2014- 2017, successfully monetizing the camp by increasing course offerings and enrollment each year.
VisArts’ ArtVenture Program is a full-day eleven-week long studio art camp for students ages 6-18. It offers more than 185 tuition-based studio art classes over the summer and serves over 1300 students.
Worked with the Director of Education and Programs, as well as other staff, to plan and coordinate 11-week long studio art camp class schedule and managed daily activities of the camp.
Created and maintained a safe and inclusive environment where students feel supported and empowered. Upheld the integrity of art education at VisArts. Served as a role model for and mentor to youth, and built supportive relationships with students and their families.
Communicated and collaborated with 45 VisArts’ art instructors throughout the course proposal, planning, and scheduling process of ArtVenture. Collaborated with the registrar to manage studio schedules. Prepared class titles and descriptions for online and print catalogs.
Managed and coordinated instructors, addressed parent and student questions, concerns, and requests, and coached and supervised approximately 30 volunteers and interns throughout the summer. Served as point of contact for all parents and students throughout the duration of the camp.
Managed expenses in accordance with budget constraints, and maintained records in VisArts’ education database.
Recruited, interviewed, and hired new art instructors. Scheduled and ran annual ArtVenture instructor meetings.
Worked with the education team to evaluate the ArtVenture program outcomes, based on enrollment numbers, budget, feedback, and parent and student surveys.

Ann Landi's Vasari 21
I often stumble over the question about the medium of my work, so I was challenged, in a good way, by art writer Ann Landi's prompt, What is a Drawing? Can my art be considered drawing? I’m happy to be included in Landi’s “What is a Drawing: Part Four,” posted on her website, vasari21.com.
