Abstract: The Bureau of Child
Adolescent
and Family Health of the Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC) recently requested a policy memo on reproductive health care for incarcerated women in Massachusetts. This memo serves to assist BPHC in coming up with a MCH needs assessment for this population. The methods used include a literature review
observation
interview
and grounded theory data analysis. It was found that no federal government body has established national standards for medical care in prisons. Various nongovernmental organizations do offer voluntary standards
including the American Correctional Association (ACA) and the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC)
which also accredit jails and prisons. Massachusetts Department of Correction (MA DOC) facilities are currently accredited by the ACA. Standards published by ACA include a section on health care
although it is not as detailed or as comprehensive as the standards published by the NCCHC. In order to uphold the highest standards for incarcerated women’s health
the researchers recommend that the Boston Public Health Commission work with community partners to gain NCCHC accreditation for the Suffolk County House of Corrections
MCI Framingham and potentially all Massachusetts county and state correctional facilities for women.\n
Abstract: \nAdolescence is a period of emerging sexual desires
behaviors and relationships
which is a normal part of human development. When adolescents are supported in healthy decision-making processes and gain access to information and services
lifelong sexual and reproductive health and overall well-being is fostered. Adolescents have a right to accurate and comprehensive reproductive health information
education and services. There is little that is being done in the U.S. to help adolescents fulfill this right to obtain the sexual and reproductive health education they need
but Boston is paving the way.\n
