The majority of my duties and responsibilities while employed as a graduate assistant by my academic department were administrative in nature. I oriented guests to the department offices, graded tests, quizzes, and papers for department professors, and was occasionally invited to proctor tests and quizzes, especially midterms and final exams. I also enjoyed several opportunities to guest lecture for Professor Michael Gray.

Survey-level history courses tend to cram hundreds of years of history into just ten to fifteen weeks' time, which can be daunting even for the most ambitious students. This has led me to develop a winning strategy for including story lines and concepts that other survey courses are often forced to leave out. In addition to the regular weekly assignments (chapter-based worksheets, bell-ringer briefs on relevant topics, and weekly one-page essays), I offer an absurd quantity of low-stakes extra credit opportunities, giving my students a powerful incentive to reach beyond the basic structure of the course and its objectives, and pursue those topics and assignments that interest them most. It doesn't matter to me how a student puts together the five hundred points that make a perfect, 100% grade, so long as the requisite number of weekly assignments have been completed.
The happy result is that the vast majority of my students in each class finish the semester with an A, some having done twice as much homework and independent research as they might have done in another 100-level class. I've also discovered the secret to encouraging regular and timely attendance, and am growing accustomed to nearly 100% on-time submission of homework assignments.
I'd welcome the opportunity to teach more courses online, and master other Learning Management Systems beyond Blackboard. I am also in the early stages of developing a series of resource-rich video lectures, for use in online courses and flipped-classroom sections. I love this work, and look forward to developing new skills, new courses, and new professional relationships.

I've taught these courses to date:
    113 American History I
113G American History I, Writing Intensive
    113VB American History I, Online (10 week)
    140 Modern Chinese History
    163 American History II
    166 Civil War and Reconstruction
    101 Intro to Political Science

    History
Thesis: Bend in the River: Institutionalization of Modern Environmentalism in United States Government Structures and Saving the Delaware from Dam-nation, 1955-1975 Abstract: It is astonishing that the mere suggestion of building a massive public works project could radically alter the cultural and physical landscape of a region, regardless of whether or not that project was completed or even properly begun. But this is precisely what happened in the Delaware River Basin between 1955 and 1975, as government agencies and representatives deliberated over building a massive earthen dam at Tocks Island. An examination of how government authorities engaged in that debate from start to finish will demonstrate how extensively the endorsement of new environmentalist concepts and ideals revolutionized the American approach to public works projects, and, by extension, how this dynamic sea-change in values radically altered the cultural and physical landscape of the Delaware Basin.
