Anti-immigrant propaganda in the United States focuses on the US-Mexico border as a forbidding space to be heavily fortified. A Diálogo on the Border (dialogue in Spanish) was organized in 2013 to bring together – under the umbrella of planning – a number of organizations and individuals from the border region and outside the area to discuss current issues facing border communities. Here we attempt to present the main lessons learned on how to facilitate meaningful public dialogue with and between people living on the border. This can be an antidote to the views of the border as a hostile space.

Learning from Collaborative Integration: The Hackathon as Design Charrette
This paper examines the application of innovative and interdisciplinary\ncollaboration methods that emerged from the rapidly developing field of\ninformation technology and its intersection within the realm of design and\narchitecture. These events
also referred to as hackathons
have risen in\npopularity in recent years (Artiles & Wallace
2013) and stem from a design\nresponse for the increasing demand for accelerated design decisions within the\nfield of architecture. This paper examines the potential of hackathons as a\nplatform for rapid development of design ideas into prototypes within a time\nconstraint of 24 hours. The paper explores the hackathon as a robust\nfoundational element for pedagogical approaches rooted in interdisciplinary\ncollaboration. Using a case-study research methodology
this paper probes the\nframework of the event
the outcomes
and the lessons learned. As this paper\ndemonstrates
the hackathon required participants to identify and explore shifting\nterritories through interdisciplinary teamwork to arrive at innovative solutions.\nIn this setting
the format of the hackathon serves as a vibrant territory that\nenables a concrete theoretical contribution to design pedagogy
CAAD education
\nand collaborative professional practice.

Resourceful Architect Competition
The Resourceful Architect
an open call for ideas about the future uses of architecture
was issued by the RSA and Architecture Foundation in February 2011
and sponsored jointly by Austin-Smith: Lord and Land Securities. The ambition of The Resourceful Architect was to prompt and give exposure to new ideas for the future uses of architecture in the changing context of professional practice.\nAwarded submission: \nA DIY instruction manual for making and installing paving slabs for the deprived community of Colonias in Texas.
Burleson County State of the Community Report
The report is a result of a group assignment conducted as part of first year\nMaster of Urban Planning class: Methods in Planning
led by Dr. Wei Li at Texas\nA&M University in Spring semester 2015.\nThe report was prepared by Master of Urban Planning students Ying Jiang
\nJeewasmi Thapa and Ph.D. in Architecture student Bara Safarova.\nThe State of the community report has been an extensive data collection and\nanalysis process through which we have attained a thorough understanding of\nthe Burleson County. They might have been some limitation in the\ncomprehension due to the lack of data. Analyzing the obtained data we\nrecommend some strategies for Burleson County.
