Temple University - Kinesiology
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)
As a graduate student I was afforded the opportunity to work as an Academic Advisor for Advising First at Florida State University (FSU). This opportunity allowed me to understand direct correlation between academia
advising
and student success through caring. As a result I developed into faculty member in higher education able to collaborate with Offices of Retention
colleagues
staff
and K-12 school districts. Additionally
I attained the pre-skills needed as a faculty member
to identify
assess and evaluate the needs of students
which presently have allowed me to develop and implement programs and strategies for improving students’ academic success.

As an advocate of physical activity and health and wellness
I believe that overall population health should be the focus when planning for growth and change in communities. Education should encompass a variety experiences which encourage individuals
families
schools and communities to become agents of change. As a professional
I find great value in creating interactive
culturally responsive learning environments and developing and encouraging others to create community-based programming to foster a desire to ignite positive societal change.

As an African American female in the field of physical education I strived to enlighten pre‐service teachers with regard to societal perpetuation of myths and fallacies of behaviors and beliefs regarding race
which can influence pre-service teachers
teachers
and the students they will teach. In the field of physical education there is constant dialog regarding the various ways that teachers and coaches can unconsciously hold racial or stereotypical biases when engaged with students of color in sport and physical education settings (Burden
