Undergraduate research titled: Prevalence of parasites in the endangered Northern flying squirrel (Glaucomys sabrinus) in Pennsylvania. This research was conducted in collaboration with Penn State Altoona, Wilkes University, and the Pennsylvania State Game Commission to try and explain the rapid decline in Northern flying squirrel populations. We speculated that the deforestation of the flying squirrels habitat has forced an interaction with a novel parasite species the flying squirrel has no natural defense against.
Pilot project titled: The potential effect of clearcut size, clearcut age, and deer management on oak regeneration in central Pennsylvania. We speculated that large area forest clearcutting was detrimental to oak (Quercus) species because of the overgrazing of oak saplings and acorns by deer and other herbivores. Our hypothesis was that staggered forest clearcutting in both space and time would reduce the overgrazing of oak species.
This research was selected as one of four to represent Penn State University in Harrisburg, PA, March 23, 2010 at "Research at the Capitol". There I personally presented our findings to State Representative Tina Pickett and State Senator Gene Yaw as well as officially being recognized on the floor of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.
