Hello! My name is Amy Casselman Hontalas and I am a lecturer in Ethnic Studies, Women & Gender Studies and American Indian Studies at San Francisco State University, California State University Stanislaus, and Laney College.
I hold a Master of Arts degree in Sociology from Stanford University, a Master of Arts degree in Ethnic Studies from San Francisco State University, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in American Studies from the University of California, Santa Cruz.
I am the author of Injustice in Indian Country: Jurisdiction, American Law, and Sexual Violence Against Native Women, a monograph examining race and gender in federal law and policy to further theorize violence against Native women in a colonial context.
My research interests include violence against women and the intersection of race, gender and colonialism in American law. My current research examines political discourse on gender in contemporary American federal policy. Specifically, I am interested in the role of empathy in community-based strategies that challenge the marginalization of women, people of color, and members of the LGBTQIA+ and gender-nonconforming communities.
Prior to my career in academia, I was a Case Worker for the Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California where I provided support services for Native children and families.
