As a scientist-practitioner-advocate
my research interests have emerged from my clinical expertise and social justice commitments. Three themes underlie my program of research: I examine how practitioners engage in multicultural practices
employ empowerment-based approaches
and promote social justice. For example
in my dissertation
I employed a grounded theory design and data analytic procedures in order to construct a substantive conceptual model that explained how self-identified feminist multicultural (FMC) psychotherapy supervisors conceptualized and practiced supervision. Specifically
my interests lie in the areas of supervision provision; psychotherapy practice with diverse
intersecting identities and statuses (e.g.
sexual orientation
gender diversity
spirituality
atheism); preventing the occurrence of
healing from
and promoting resilience for those with a history of trauma (e.g.
university violence
gender-based discrimination
childhood maltreatment); as well as qualitative research
particularly grounded theory.\n\nThe commitment to multicultural social justice that underlies my research is a springboard for my pedagogical approach. Thereby
I acknowledge that truth is subjective
emerges from social interaction
and is embedded in a socially and historically constructed reality rife with oppression and power imbalances. My teaching approach emerges from a feminist pedagogical foundation. Therefore
I seek to anticipate and manage classroom power dynamics
be collaborative and transparent with students
encourage reflexivity of biases and assumptions
and attune to the implications of context. Regardless of the class
I promote the fulfillment of three goals via the development of (a) active
empowered learners; (b) critical consumers of psychological research; and (c) skills to apply classroom-based knowledge in the real world. \n
