Introns are parts of genes that do not contain any coding information, and for a long time were considered junk. We now know that some introns have a huge effect on the amount of protein produced from a gene. It is clear that the effect of introns is unlike that of other gene regulatory elements, although we are still working out exactly how they increase gene expression. This work is relevant to any biotechnology venture that depends on getting a gene expressed to a high level.
Project Scientist
I am the principle investigator of a research lab in which we study how introns significantly increase gene expression in plants and other organisms. In addition to writing grant applications and papers, I work in the lab using a variety of molecular biology techniques.
