University of Iowa - Geography
GIS Analyst
Landscape ecology-based research project that included data manipulation, AML scripting in ArcINFO 6.0, and data analysis in Fragstats statistical software.
GIS Analyst and Research Assistant
US Forest Service-funded project researching ecological modeling in a rapidly urbanizing area near Chicago, Illinois. Projects focused on the use of GIS in modeling open space selection for grassland birds, butterflies, and other ecological criteria. Thesis work included development of a method for modeling Alternative Futures for open space using a desktop GIS setup. Additional tasks include database creation, management, data analysis, manuscript preparation, and cartography.
GIS Administrator
My position withing GSS and CLAS is to offer GIS support to users in the department, college, and university as a whole. I am the chair of the University's GIS Technical Advisory Committee (TAC), which attempts to grow and focus the GIS community on campus. In addition to my support role I am also tasked with oversight of the GISIL (GIS Instructional Lab) in 243 Jessup Hall, assisting in developing research (as it pertains to GIS) for both departmental and non-departmental faculty, teaching short training sessions and short courses, and organizing ICIGO (undergraduate student group).
Research:
My research interests are focused primarily on the application of Geographic Information Systems to contemporary environmental and social issues. In my position with GSS I am available to consult on research questions which require GIS assistance, and if necessary, provide resources and solutions to assist in those projects.
Teaching:
In addition to GIS support I also offer training in Introductory GIS and other, more specific, topics. As noted previously I provide oversight for the ICIGO student organization which seeks to provide community outreach in the form of GIS research.
Technology:
We utilize cutting-edge technologies for use in geospatial data collection and or exploration. Specifically we work with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), terrestrial LiDAR scanners, virtual reality, etc.
GIS Specialist
The primary focus of this work was to identify and map termite activity on campus over time. Research included regular monitoring of over 2000 stations as well as 50-plus buildings. Work duties included development and maintenance of a GIS database, digitizing and conversion between spatial formats, and monitoring of stations in field. Focus on ArcGIS 8.x, AutoCAD.
GIS Analyst / Data Manager
A contract position with the United States Environmental Protection Agency designed to provide GIS support to a team of researchers working on a multi-model ecosystem simulator for the Flint Hills of Kansas. Work duties included GIS database creation and management, acquisition and analysis of a variety of data sets, point of contact for specialists in a variety of fields, communication of findings, map creation, web design for information and product distribution, and supporting and informing collaborators on the use of GIS products.
Information Manager - Konza LTER
Information manager (IM) for the Konza Prairie Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) site, an NSF-funded project. The Konza research site has been collecting data since the early 1970’s, with the LTER being added in 1981. Primary responsibilities include managing all research data that come from projects involving the LTER, and making those accessible per NSF data management guidelines. IM responsibilities include data management, QA/QC, SQL Server database administration, archival, outreach, hardware support, GIS support, cartography, web design and development, research, and oversight of a team of support staff.
